DORSET has rated in the top 10 ‘spookiest locations’ in the UK.
New research study by iVisa ahead of Halloween places the county 10th on the listing because of the historical goings-on at Corfe Castle.
At the centre is the story of the murder of an 18-year old Anglo-Saxon successor to the throne, Edward the Saint.
It is claimed that Edward the Martyr was slaughtered in the premises of the castle at the orders of his stepmother Queen Elfrida as she wanted to bring about the sequence of her own son, Ethelred, later on known as ‘The Unready’.
There is also the tale of the Lady in White, a macabre figure of a brainless woman in white who has actually been seen stalking the walls and also battlements.
First is London, because of its deep history and host of famous attractions such as the Tower of London as well as Hampton Court Palace (presumably house to the ghosts of Henry VII’s many deceased partners) along with many sighted ghost hauntings.
